Be a Pet Hero: Kindness, Care & Safety Around Animals at Keystone Heights Library

What does it really mean to be a good friend to an animal?
In this fun and interactive program, participants will learn how to be responsible, respectful, and safe around the animals in their lives. We’ll explore what pets need to be happy and healthy—including food, water, shelter, exercise, veterinary care, love, and plenty of patience.
We’ll talk about how animals communicate and why it’s important to respect their personal space. Participants will learn how to interact appropriately with their own pets, understand when an animal may want to be left alone, and recognize some of the signals animals use to tell us how they are feeling.
And then comes the big question: What should you do if you see a strange dog in your neighborhood?
Should you run? Pet it? Call it over? Stand still? We’ll talk through real-life situations and learn some simple rules for safely responding when we encounter unfamiliar animals.
Through stories, questions, and hands-on discussion, participants will discover that being an animal lover isn't just about wanting to hug every dog or cat we meet. It’s about understanding animals, respecting their needs, making responsible choices, and knowing how to keep both ourselves and animals safe. Because being a true animal hero means knowing when to play, when to help, when to give space—and when to walk away.
